Run DMC was a hip-hop collective from New York City that was formed in 1983. Consisting of members Jason Mizell, Joseph Simmons, and Daryl McDaniels, Run DMC were pioneers of the rap scene and have continued to be largely influential on up-and-coming artists nearly four decades later. Truly an unprecedented group, they were the first to achieve many successes in the hip-hop genre- they had the first gold and platinum-selling records in hip-hop, the first hip-hop artists to have their work aired on MTV, and one of the first hip-hop groups to have their art submitted to the National Library of Congress for its significance.

The Beastie Boys was a rap group from New York City that rose to fame in the 80s. They originally were an experimental hardcore punk band called the "Young Aborigines" but after achieving local success with the comedy hip-hop single "Cooky Puss" in 1983, Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip-hop and rap. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album, "Licensed to Ill", the first rap record to top the Billboard charts. They have won several Grammys since 1992 and became the third rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
