Kehlani (they/them) is one of the modern banner bearers of the neo soul movement. Their sultry voice lulls the listener into a trance, and their lyrics and melodies lift the listener into a transcendental warmth. Born Kehlani Ashley Parrish, they were adopted at an early age by their aunt, after their father died of a drug overdose and their mom was incarcerated. Kehlani grew up in their aunt's house listening to almost exclusively R&B and neo soul. They cite Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu as major influences. They joined a pop group, Poplyfe, at the age of 14 before going solo. Kehlani identifies as a nonbinary lesbian, and they have spoken about the importance of using she/her pronouns in their lyrics. They have been nominated for two Grammys, and toured/collaborated with multiple fellow A-listers, such as Halsey, Demi Lovato, Eminem, Chance the Rapper, etc. They live on a small California farm with their daughter.
