High Desert Sage has a lightly woody scent and is highly aromatic. It also burns slowly for extended smoke. It is used to cleanse one's body and space, to chase out unwanted spirits, and to induce sweating in sweat lodges, a spiritual meditative practice.
The intention of smudging is to spiritually purify the surroundings. This is done by setting the smudging bundle alight, then blowing it out, and placing it in a (non-flammable!) bowl.
