"When the Kite String Pops" is the debut album of sludge metal band Acid Bath, released in 1994. It is considered an underground classic in the metal scene. The album's artwork is a self-portrait made by notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy while in prison awaiting execution. The character is named "Skull Clown" in which he depicts himself as his alter-ego, "Pogo the Clown."

Acid Bath was a sludge metal band from a town just south of New Orleans. They were only active from 1991 to 1997 and disbanded after their bassist passed away. Acid Bath was the merging of two other local metal bands, Dark Karnival and Golgotha. The bands skillfully meshed their doom metal roots with influences from hardcore punk, death metal, gothic rock, and blues to create Acid Bath's unique sound. They are best known for their death growls, melancholic goth/grunge-style vocals, and acoustic guitar passages, as well as the use of sampling and spoken word poetry. The band has even sampled sound clips from controversial movies like "Blue Velvet" and "A Clockwork Orange." Their lyrics are frequently poetic, though often displaying an obsession with death, drug use, mental illness, dark humor, Louisiana-based regional culture, and continuous references to animism as well as paganism, nihilism, and misanthropy.
