John Coltrane - A Love Supreme

John Coltrane’s magnum opus, “A Love Supreme,” became an iconic capstone to the jazzman’s career two years before he’d succumb to liver cancer at 40. He created a deeply spiritual record as an ode to God’s plan and his faith. Like on the track “Psalm,” which is based around a poem he wrote to God but to music where each sax note corresponds to each syllable in a poem. The album would go on to be their best-selling and inspired a wave of profoundly conceptual jazz unconcerned with the “cool guy” factor that defined the genre before.

The most celebrated jazz saxophonist in the history of the genre, John Coltrane pioneered the genre of modal jazz with the help of Miles Davis and directly developed free jazz. He also worked closely with great jazz pianist Thelonious Monk and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Following his recovery from heroin addiction, Coltrane became a very spiritual man. His newfound faith bled into some of his greatest '60s-era work. He died of liver cancer at 40 but changed the course of jazz and mainstream music as a whole during his short life.
